Viet Nam’s 3 key aquaculture spices

Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung has just signed Decision No. 50/2018/QD-TTg stipulating Viet Nam’s main aquaculture species. Accordingly, the main aquaculture species include: black tiger shrimp, white shrimp and pangasius.

According to Decision No. 50/2018 / QD-TTg, aquaculture species must meet four criteria to be considered a national main aquaculture spices:

1 - On the list of aquaculture species permitted for business purpose in Viet Nam.

2 - Capable of creating jobs and higher income for workers; effectively leveraging natural resources and natural conditions of the country and adaptive to climate change.

3 - Capable of generating high yield and productivity; capable of attracting investment to create large-scale concentrated production areas and fostering high technology application.

4 - Creating high value-added products; capable of competing with other countries' aquatic products in domestic and export markets, with a minimum annual export value of USD 100 million.

The Decision specifies the list of key aquaculture species, which include: Black tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon Fabricus, 1798); White shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei Boone, 1931); and Pangasianodon hypophthalmus Sauvage, 1878).

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development shall be responsible for state management, formulation and direction of the implementation of strategies, plans and schemes to develop key aquaculture species in the whole country; providing orientation for the development of key aquaculture species integrated into the system of national sector planning, regional planning and provincial planning.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development shall manage updates on the development of key aquaculture species based on national fisheries data; annually synthesize and report to the Prime Minister on the development results of key aquaculture species.

Basing on the actual situation and development requirements, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development shall propose to the Prime Minister to adjust the regulations on key aquaculture species.

Provincial People's Committees shall responsible for state management, formulation and direction of the implementation of strategies, plans and schemes to develop key aquaculture species in their respective provinces; providing orientation for the development of key aquaculture species in district land use planning.

Organizations and individuals involved in the trading of key aquaculture species must fulfill the registration of their aquaculture activities according to current regulations. They shall be eligible to preferential policies according to the current legislation. Competent agencies shall have the responsibility to provide these organizations and individuals with information on environmental warning observation results and the situation on development of key aquaculture species upon request.

The Decision takes effect as of 30/01/2019.
