SUSTAINABLE AQUACULTURE DEVELOPMENT PLAN IN THE MEKONG DELTA TO 2030

On August 12, 2021, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development approved the “The Sustainable Aquaculture Development Plan in the Mekong Delta to 2030” in Decision No. 3550/QD-BNN-TCTS

The Plan was developed in line with the “Fisheries Development Strategy in Vietnam for the period of 2021 - 2030, vision to 2045” and Resolution 120/NQ-CP on “Sustainable development of the Mekong Delta adapting to climate change”, in adaptation to climate change, fostering advanced technology application, responsible production, in-line with the international institutions, and towards economic growth in the Mekong Delta. The development of the Plan was led by Directorate of Fisheries, MARD in cooperation with the Mekong Delta Climate Resilience Programme (MCRP), GIZ.

The Plan targets that by 2030, the aquaculture export value is expected to reach over USD 9 billion (now USD 5.27 billion) with a total area of over 990,000 ha and a total output of over 4,800,000 tons.

At the same time, aquaculture sector will focus on improving the capacity of farmers, strengthening value chain linkages, improving infrastructure, and promoting production towards certifications.

In this relation, MCRP has prioritized on technical support such as initiating the innovative mangrove-shrimp farming model, shrimp-rice model, recirculatory aquaculture system, applying innovations and technology, especially MCRP focuses on strengthening the Public Private Partnership mechanism in order to foster the role of key actors in the aquaculture value chain, who are private enterprises to contribute to the sustainability of aquaculture.
