New solution improving pesticide use and management in Vietnam

May 17th 2019, in Hanoi, the Sustainable Trade Initiative (IDH) and Department of Plant Protection (PPD) co-organized the official launching of the Vietnam mobile-based pesticide application in the presence of key representatives from both public and private sectors, business associations, international organizations, the media and farmers - critical users of the app.

Vietnam, as the top worldwide agriculture producer, has delivered high quantity of various agriculture products globally for decades. The country agricultural production not only meets the needs of nearly 100 million people and are but also exported to 180 countries and territories with a total annual export turnover of over 42 billion USD.  Pesticide has been realized as essential element in agricultural production. Due to limited knowledge of pesticide, farmers are using pesticide either based on habits or following the guidance from the pesticide informal local sale agents who do not always provide the right choice and instruction.  Recognizing the farmers’ need to access all necessary pesticide information, IDH and PPD have collaborated to develop a Mobile-based pesticide app. Naming “Thuoc BVTV”, intensive consultation with related stakeholders and farmers has been conducted to develop the app with user-friendly interface and easy-to-use design. The app is now available in both Apple and Google stores. This will provides farmers all information about the registered pesticides including recommendations on specific pesticides for respective pests/diseases and on specific crops. Farmers can also find the instructions on how to use pesticide correctly in certain crops such as coffee, tea, and pepper in the app.  From May 2019, the app and its database will be officially managed and regularly updated by the Plant Protection Department and will be improved continuously based on farmers’ feedback. After the launching, IDH and PPD will organize trainings of trainers on the app to staff from relevant government agencies, associations, and companies. These trainees will, in turn, become trainers for farmers later.
