Mekong region development: Sustainable cooperation and development promoted

At the World Economic Forum on the Mekong Region 2016, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc brought out 4 proposals for peaceful and stable political security, dynamic and connecting economics, sustainable environment and harmonized society.

World Economic Forum on the Mekong Region 2016 took place in Ha Noi National Conference Center on 25th October with the participation of Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hunsen, Laos Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith, Myanmar President Htin Kyaw, Thai Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak and many economic Ministers, WEF enterprise and corporation members and international experts/scholars.

With the theme of “Mekong region development: Investing in infrastructure, human resource and connectivity”, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc emphasized the important position and role of Mekong region in Southeast Asia and Asia-Pacific as well as the huge development potential of this region.

PM mentioned that focusing on building a Mekong region consisting of peaceful and stable political security, dynamic and connecting economics, sustainable environment and harmonized society will bring the mutual benefit for the Mekong countries and region, practically contributing to implementing the objectives of ASEAN Community and strengthening the peaceful, stable and developed environment of the region.

PM said that Mekong countries should focus on promoting economic connectivity, infrastructure development, especially developing and finalizing the sub-region economic corridors; enhancing cooperation to create favourable conditions for trade, investment and tourism; PM prioritized the innovation and creativity to increase the labour productivity, strengthen the Public-Private Partnership for the sustainable development of Viet Nam particularly and the whole Mekong region generally.

On the sidelines of the conference, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc received WEF Managing Director Richard Samans. At this meeting, PM highly appreciated WEF for supporting and successful co-organizing the World Economic Forum on the Mekong region with many practical contents, attracting a large number of WEF leading corporation members.
PM called WEF for coordination in considering the possibility of maintaining the organization of WEF on the Mekong region in the future in order to promote the partnership amongst Mekong countries and WEF cooperation members.

Mr Samans thanked Vietnamese government for creating favorable condition and closely coordinating with WEF to well prepare the conference; He highly appreciated the Viet Nam’s role in the region and expected to further cooperate with Viet Nam in the future WEF’s activities and initiatives.
