According to Agro-Trade (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), the export value of vegetables and fruits in May 2019 was estimated at US$ 424 million, bringing the value of vegetables and fruits export in the first 5 months of 2019 to VND 1.83 billion, up 10.3% over the same period in 2018.
China is the biggest market for fruit and vegetable imports of Viet Nam in the first 4 months of 2019 with 74.26% market share. The next is the US market, accounted for 3.16%; South Korea 3.03%; Japan 2.53%...
The markets that had sharp increase of vegetables and fruits export value were Australia – increasing 39.9%; Netherlands - 29.22%; South Korea - 25.53% and France - 24.81%.
Estimated value of imported vegetables and fruits in May 2019 was US$ 228 million, bringing the total value of imported fruits and vegetables in the first 5 months of 2019 to US$ 878 million, up 46% over the same period in 2018.
The Agro-Trade said that by the end of April 2019, China had granted permission to import Vietnamese mangosteen, which was the ninth fruit to be officially exported to this market (after dragon fruit, lychee, watermelon, longan, banana, mango, jackfruit, rambutan).
According to the forecast, in 2019, the Chinese market will import fruit with the value exceeding US$ 10 billion. Particularly in the first 4 months of this year, the value of imported vegetables and fruits by Chinese market has increased to US$ 3.1 billion, exceeding 26% over the same period last year; in which the fastest growth was mangosteen (up 600%).
The goal of the agricultural sector set for export in 2019 was US$ 42 billion and Vietnamese enterprises are actively expanding exports to new and fastidious markets with great potential such as the U.S. and European countries.
In 2018, Viet Nam's export of vegetables and fruits to the US reached US$ 123 million. The total output of fresh fruit exported to the US, that had to be irradiated, was by nearly 7,500 tons of all kinds, an increase of 75 times compared to 2008. It is likely that the turnover will grow strongly in 2019, because recently Vietnamese enterprises officially exported fresh mango to the US (after dragon fruit, rambutan, longan, lychee, star apple). The two sides are continuing to negotiate for the US to open more access for pomelo fruit from Viet Nnam.
After the US, Europe is a potential export market for fruits and vegetables. This is also the largest market for frozen vegetables and fruits in the world, accounting for nearly 50% of the total import turnover of global frozen vegetables and fruits.
