The 2021-2030 development scheme for the seafood processing industry aims to make Vietnam the seafood processing center ranking in the top 5 around the world.
Deputy Prime Minister Le Van Thanh has recently signed Decision No. 1408/QD-TTg dated August 16th, 2021 approving the 2021-2030 development scheme for the seafood processing industry.
The scheme aims to develop modern, efficient and sustainable seafood processing, meeting the needs and regulations of the consumption market; improve competitiveness and continue to integrate deeply into the global value chain.
Establish modern processing corporations and enterprises
The scheme strives to attain the processed seafood production growth rate of over 6% annually by 2030. The export value proportion of value-added processed seafood products reached an average of over 40% (in which shrimp reached 60%, tra fish reached 10%, tuna 70%, squid and octopus reached 30%, other aquatic products reached 30%).
Over 70% of aquatic products processing establishments for export have had production technology competence and capability reached medium and advanced level or higher. Several modern seafood processing corporations and enterprises have been established, with economic potential and management level on par with the global level.
The seafood processing value for domestic consumption has reached VND 40,000 - 45,000 billion, contributing to helping the value of seafood export turnover reach about USD 14-6 billion.
Promote processing of high added value products
To achieve the mentioned objectives, the scheme has set out a number of essential tasks:
Organize the control and development of raw materials for aquatic product processing from farming, exploitation and importation to meet the needs of processing enterprises, suitable for domestic consumption and export demand; in accordance with Vietnam’s conditions and regulations as well as international practices; ensuring the requirements of traceability, avoid origin fraud, trade fraud.
Attract investment to establish large seafood processing corporations and companies of high economic potential and world-class management level; upgrade seafood processing facilities for export to acquire the level and capacity of advanced production technology; improve processing capacity and technological level of domestic seafood processing and consumption establishments, ensure food hygiene and safety conditions, diversify types of seafood processing products.
Promote the processing of high added value products, focusing on key product groups (shrimp, tra fish, tuna); diversify processed products, pay close attention to research and development of products from tuna, seaweed and by-products; Extract high value biologically active compounds for the food, chemical and pharmaceutical industries.
